Welcome to the Rome International Documentary Festival (RIDF) — a vibrant celebration of non-fiction cinema and documentary creativity, set in the heart of one of the world’s most iconic cities.
RIDF seeks original and bold narrative documentaries — works that challenge conventions, embrace innovation, and offer fresh perspectives on the world around us. We welcome films unafraid to experiment with form, explore complex realities, and give voice to the unheard.
Founded and run by documentary filmmakers, RIDF is a space where stories come to life, boundaries dissolve, and filmmakers, artists, and audiences come together to engage with the urgencies of our time.
Our mission is to amplify strong, diverse voices from across the globe, with a particular focus on independent storytelling. We believe in the power of documentary not only as a tool for information, but as a transformative force — capable of generating empathy, provoking thought, and sparking change.
Every year, RIDF brings to Rome a curated selection of films: daring debuts, innovative languages, and critical perspectives that question dominant narratives. In addition to screenings, the festival offers a rich program of talks, masterclasses, and conversations with filmmakers — creating a dynamic space for exchange among authors, professionals, students, and audiences.
RIDF 2025 is officially open for submissions for its fourth edition, taking place December 3rd to 7th, 2025, in Rome.
We are looking for original narrative documentaries that push the boundaries of cinematic language and offer new ways of observing and telling reality.

RIDF is more than just a showcase: it’s a meeting place. We place great importance on hospitality, creating a relaxed and inspiring environment where filmmakers can connect, share experiences, and engage with audiences. Through post-screening conversations, networking events, and informal gatherings, RIDF celebrates not only the art of documentary, but the community that brings it to life.
